Healthy, low sugar dessert featuring apples and blueberries! Dessert designed to let ice cream take the sweetness over the top!
Blueberry Apple Sonker Low Sugar
If you appreciate a tad of tartness your dessert, you will like this deep dish blueberry apple baked dessert. The only added sugar is 2 tablespoons of raw honey! Otherwise this is simple, fast and an excellent dessert on its own. Of course to officially be a sonker, top off with two or more scoops of vanilla ice cream right before serving! We suggest letting it cool a bit, but let it be warm enough so that the ice cream starts to melt. Don’t worry about having a mushy left over, we guarantee it will be gone in the first pass! (bake two and keep one in the warmer to cover seconds!)
- 6 cups frozen blueberries
- 2 med apples (sweetest you can find)
- 2 tblspn honey
- 2 tblspn ground cinnamon
- 1 box prepared pie crust (optional – your favorite crust recipe)
- 1 quart vanilla ice cream (It is only a cobbler without the ice cream)
- Heat oven to 350,
- Peel, core and then dice apples as fine as you can. Be sure all the core is removed if you use an apple slicer. Sliced apples should be about the thickness of a nickel.
- Mix frozen blueberries and diced apples with cinnamon and honey. If necessary, warm honey gently to make it easier to mix.
- Place mixture in deep dish 8×8 glass baking pan and cover with prepared crust of your choice. (The original experiment used a prepared crust.)
- Bake for 35 minutes or until crust is properly golden brown. Decorations optional if you have extra crust.
- Let cool, but keep warm. Before serving add two or more scoops of vanilla ice cream on top.
- Repeat just incase you think one might not do!
Make two!
